The crisis in the print media has finally reached the most trusted gay news media and the Advocate won’t be published anymore as a “stand alone print subscription.” Translation: Twenty something swim suit models simply sell more magazines than political commentary. I admit I didn’t quite believe it, when the first bundled issue of OUT and the Advocate showed up in the mail last month. With the second mailing, I guess I have to accept it. Yes, it has been a long time coming. First the Advocate switched from every other week to a monthly format, which realistically doesn’t work for a news magazine. Then it grew thinner and thinner. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy browsing the cute guys wearing next to nothing, I was simply hoping that the good news magazine would still be there, when I finally had the time to get back to it. I was wrong.
I still wish someone had organized a decent wake for the Advocate. Perhaps a last issue with a tombstone on the cover? The Advocate deserved better than to be shoved out with the “welcome to a better world” cover letter it got (see below). But then I’m an old, married guy and still believe a dead body deserves a proper funeral instead of being stuffed and left to dry.
This letter came with my the first double issue:

Miltary service
After serving in the Marines and retiring and playing the Don't Tell shell game I have only one thing to say. It is not your preference that counts it is the guts and loyalty to the person's that count on you for their safety in combat. I have watched the so called macho red blooded servicemen run under fire. What i am saying is what does it matter as long as he or she lives up to what they are trained to do. I had a few in my platoon that I new and trusted in combat that are singled out now as " GAY". They served as true hard core Marines that I am PROUD to have known. We fight around the world for equal rights for all. So we come home and find what we are sent to over come is a serious problem in our on military. I am as they call straight and call a lot of men and women I meet in service that were hiding my friends. I salute you for standing up for your rights as Americans.
